Serving as Clark County's primary 24-hour accessible, emergency shelter for homeless women and women with children in crisis since December 1990, more than 16,000 clients have been served to date. Consistently, children make up 50% of our residential population and 38% of all adult females report a history of domestic violence. Currently housed in a building slated for demolition within the next 12 to 18 months, our most urgent need is to secure a new home. We have already purchased the vacant lot located on the SW corner of Main and Owens and completed architectural plans for a new 40,000 square foot facility. The new facility will increase total sleeping capacity from 84 to 500 women and children per night. Since federal, state and local capital funds are both restricted and limited, community support will be vital to the completion of this 3.2 million-dollar project. Capital donations, although vital, are not the only way to provide support. In-kind donations (of all sorts) and volunteers are also needed.
